As you probably just saw, this is the vinyl window cling, now a crumpled mess, that Paul brought back from Books of Wonder to his studio after the Still Life diorama was taken down from the window and situated on top of a bookshelf in the store.

But here’s why that wasn't the end of the road for the vinyl artist:

Greenwillow Books (the division of HarperCollins that published Still Life) was having a big anniversary, celebrating fifty years since its founding. Greenwillow artists from over the years were invited to show a few pieces of art at the event, and when Paul visited their offices with his pictures, he looked around the main floor at all the glass walls and doors surrounding the big room where the party would be held. Immediately he imagined a second use for his vinyl artist. He asked if he could try to stick the window cling up on one of those walls. And he got permission, just for day of the party.

Back at his studio, Paul flattened the poor artist out as well as he could—it stayed very wrinkly—and rolled it up as well as he could and waited for the day of the event.

That morning, when Paul arrived at HarperCollins, editor and art director came down from their offices to help with the installation. They chose a nice location, and the application began. The vinyl artist stuck nicely to the glass wall. With lots of attention and a squeegee, all of his wrinkles and bubbles got pushed away, and he grew smooth as glass! Paul returned in the evening for the lively and nostalgia-filled party. We don't know how many people noticed the window cling artist, but the artist seemed to be having a good time!

A lot of well-known children’s writers and illustrators were in this room. It was a memorable night.

The next day Paul came back to peel the artist off the glass wall, which wasn’t hard when he sprayed water to loosen the grip. He laid the wet vinyl out on paper to dry, and later to roll up and take home.

Then, not knowing what else to do, he stuck it in the closet.

And it seems that the closet is where it will stay until for whatever reason it is moved.

Do you have any use for a 30” x 66” gesticulating vinyl window cling artist? Please let Paul know!
