“Hansel and Gretel” may be the best-known of the fairytales in Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm's famous collection. This retelling by poet and translator Rika Lesser is largely a translation of the earliest known version that the Grimms found. It is bolder, simpler, and in many ways starker but also more beautiful than the edited versions that followed. |

“Hansel and Gretel” carried strong childhood associations for Paul. When he came to children's book illustration, he saw no existing interpretation that felt right to him, so, he tried his own version. He wanted to bring out the majesty and the large emotions the story evoked for him. This was his first picture book to be recognized by the Caldecott award committee.
